When to Change Your Safe Combination

by | Dec 3, 2025 | Safes

A safe is only as secure as the people who know how to open it. Combinations get shared, written down, or compromised more often than most owners realize, and knowing when to update yours is one of the simplest ways to stay protected. At Frog’s Safe & Key, a locally owned, licensed locksmith founded in 2018 with a staffed Amarillo storefront and mobile service, we handle safe combination changes for residential and commercial safes across Amarillo and the surrounding Texas Panhandle.

After Someone Who Knew the Combination Leaves

If an employee with combination access leaves your business, that code should be updated before the next business day. The same applies at home. Common situations that call for an immediate change include:

  • A former employee, voluntary or otherwise
  • A roommate or family member who has moved out
  • A housekeeper or contractor whose work has ended

You cannot always know whether someone wrote the combination down or shared it. Changing it removes that uncertainty and restores full control over who can open your safe.

After a Break-In or Security Incident

If your home or business has experienced a break-in, even one where the safe was not opened, treat the combination as potentially compromised. Burglars sometimes return for a second attempt, and a combination found written nearby or photographed on a phone could put your contents at risk.

Any security incident is a signal to review and update your access credentials. Our safe locksmith team can assess the condition of your lock and dial during the same visit, so you know everything is functioning correctly after a stressful event.

When You First Purchase or Inherit a Safe

Factory default combinations are documented in owner’s manuals and manufacturer resources, making them a known starting point rather than a secure one. If you buy a used safe or inherit one, there is no reliable way to know how many people learned the previous combination. Changing it when you take ownership ensures you are the only person with access.

Frog’s carries the largest selection of safes in the area at our Amarillo showroom, and we can set a new combination as part of safe installation, so your safe is secure from day one.

When the Lock Starts Behaving Differently

A combination change is also worth scheduling when something feels off with the lock. Watch for these warning signs:

  • A dial that spins loosely or feels inconsistent
  • An electronic keypad that requires multiple attempts to open
  • Boltwork that feels sticky or sluggish

These symptoms do not always mean a full lock replacement is needed, but they do warrant a professional inspection. Our team can tell you whether a recombination or replacement is the right call. Staying ahead of a failing lock is far less disruptive than a lockout, but if you do find yourself in that situation, our lockout service covers safes as well as cars, homes, and offices.

On a Regular Maintenance Schedule

Even when nothing has gone wrong, updating safe combinations on a defined schedule is a sound practice. Annual changes are a reasonable baseline for most residential safes. Business safes used by multiple staff members benefit from more frequent updates, especially when roles or access levels shift.

Treating combination changes as routine maintenance keeps your security consistent and gives a technician the opportunity to lubricate the lock mechanism and verify the boltwork. Our safe services cover both mechanical dial locks and electronic keypads, and our safe sales team can advise on upgrades if your current lock no longer meets your needs.
